Planning for California

Five Games in Six Days

Our home base is in the northeast so we decided we would try to complete as many of the farthest ballparks early on so we are not left with all of the long flights and trips at the end. We figured California was a great place to start and we set out to see five ballparks in six days, leaving one day for travel between southern and northern California.

Given our time constraints we also decided we wanted to do absolutely no backtracking. We were either going to start in San Francisco and go south to San Diego or visa versa. That said I knew I needed to get my hands on some baseball schedules to figure out what time of the year all five teams played in the same week. I was able to find CSV downloads on the MLB website and piece this together.

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway

We decided to knock off another bucket list item and drive as much of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) possible. If you are unfamiliar with the PCH (California 1), it is just over 650 miles of coastal highway with amazing views of California beaches, oceans, and mountains. Driving the PCH you’ll pass through Huntington, Malibu, Santa Monica, Laguna Beach, Big Sur and many more cities and beaches. (We weren’t able to see Big Sur due to closures resulting from mudslides.)

Travel tip: it was actually cheaper to book the car rental for five days rather than four days because we were able to take advantage of weekly rates. If your return date is flexible, see what is cheaper!

What better way to drive the PCH in southern California than in a Mustang Convertible? We arranged to have the convertible ready for pick up from the San Diego airport (our first stop) and were lucky enough to get great weather most of the way.

Pulling up to Laguna Beach without a care in the world!
